How I Individually Sandcast Each Piece of Jewellery

Every piece I make starts the same way.

With sand.

Not a mould that gets reused. Not something mass-produced.

Just sand, metal, and a process that’s a little bit unpredictable every single time.

It Starts With Wax

The initial design process begins with creating a master from wax.

I carve, cut, scrape, melt, sand—basically work it until it feels right.

No strict rules, just shaping and reshaping until a delicious little beautiful creation starts to take form.

This wax piece becomes the starting point for everything that follows.

Into the Sand

The shape is pressed into a bed of sand, creating a mould.

It’s not perfect. It’s not meant to be.

The texture of the sand is what gives each piece its surface—those tiny details and irregularities that make it feel raw and organic.

No two impressions are ever exactly the same.

Molten Metal

Then comes the good part.

The metal is melted down until it’s completely liquid, and then it’s poured straight into the sand mould.

This is where things get interesting.

The way the metal flows, settles, and cools—it changes slightly every time.

That’s what makes each piece different.

Breaking It Open

Once the metal has cooled, the sand is broken away to reveal the piece inside.

This is always my favourite part.

You don’t see the final result until this moment.

Sometimes it’s exactly how you imagined. Sometimes it’s better.

Refining the Piece

After casting, each piece is cleaned up and finished by hand.

Edges are smoothed, surfaces refined—but not too much.

The texture is part of it. That’s what makes sandcast jewellery what it is.

Too polished, and it loses its character.

Why Every Piece Is Different

Because the mould is made fresh every time, nothing is ever repeated exactly.

The sand shifts. The metal moves. The outcome changes.

Even if I make the “same” design twice, it won’t be identical.

And that’s the whole point.

Final Thoughts

This isn’t a process that’s about perfection.

It’s about texture, variation, and letting the material do its thing.

Every piece is made individually, from start to finish.

No copies. No repeats. No shortcuts.
